Clean cooking

An often overlooked aspect of sustainability in the global food system is how people prepare their food. Globally, over 2 billion people still rely on traditional fuels such as firewood and charcoal. Yearly, over 4 million people die as a result of indoor air pollution caused by the use of biomass fuels and inefficient traditional cooking technology. Besides their impact on health, these practices are also an important driver of deforestation and forest degradation and responsible for 2-5% of global GHG emissions.

Providing people with clean cooking technology  has significant impact on various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Clean cooking projects provide low-income households with modern and efficient cooking technology that reduces indoor air pollution and GHG emissions related to the burning of solid biomass. Additionally, these projects have a positive effect on fuel expenses and reduce the pressure on forests caused by unsustainable fuelwood collection and charcoal production.

Alternative fuels such as agri-waste briquettes,  pellets or biogas can serve as cleaner and more sustainable source of energy for households or small businesses. It it also leads to increased circularity for the agri-food sector.

Solar energy offers households a clean and reliable source of electricity. This enables the charging of smartphones and it allows children to complete their homework even when it’s dark outside. With sufficient capacity it can even be used for using electric pressure cookers or solar induction stoves.
